On August 31, 2001, we flew from LAX to Barcelona in an attempt to experience the ultimate dream vacation: a back-to-back cruise on the Mediterranean. Our scheduled ports of call: 1) Barcelona, Spain, 2) Monaco / Monte-Carlo, 3) Florence, Italy, 4) Naples, Italy, 5) Venice, Italy, 6) Athens, Greece, 7) Ephesus, Turkey, and 8) Istanbul, Turkey. Then, we were planning to stay on the cruise ship for the ride back to Barcelona, stopping at all the same ports of call once more. This was our first exploration of the Mediterranean, and dammit, we wanted more than an afternoon in these places! While the tragic events of September 11 halted our plans, we did end up experiencing a great vacation. We saw all the ports once, and Istanbul, Athens, and Barcelona twice.
